Congratulations "UK Fan" you are the March 2009 Elmo Award Winner. You can now say you earned your ticket into the winner's circle and all you had to do was embrace the notion that John Calipari is your men's basketball savior. Coach Cal has been viewed as the 'next great thing' in Cat Country, however no one seems to want to acknowledge that his hiring comes with a price.

His strengths have been documented nauseously over the past 48-hours, but few local media outlets have failed to shed light on the fact that the number of skeletons in his closet would have made Jeffrey Dahmer envious. No one doubts that he will bring in talented recruits, no one doubts that he will post 20-win seasons consistently, and no one doubts that he will be successful on the court. The question once again is...at what price?

I haven't forgotten the incident at the University of Massachusetts's where players were given "gifts" to attend and play for the Minutemen (i.e. Marcus Camby and his bling the size of a dinner plate come to mind). I haven't forgotten the fact that the kids he brings into the school's he represents many times have strong character issues (e.g. rape charges, drug charges, weapons charges, attitudes, etc.). And I haven't forgotten that fact that his players seem to care more about the name they sport on the back of the jersey, more than the name they sport on the front of the jersey - a trend that clearly begins with each programs leadership or coach.

Yes UK Fan you have finally sold-out for selfish desires and given into the notion that winning at all costs is the only thing. It doesn't matter the consequences as long as you WIN and WIN now! That truly embodies what the Elmo Awards are all about. Enjoy the good and the bad UK Fan (if it even matters to you) that comes with Coach Cal, because just like you found out with Rick Pitino...it will be gone in a flash. Selfish desires always trump everything else with guys like these.
